SAFRA / Caltex Petrol Discount

Visit the SAFRA website for further details.

Note: You won’t be able to enjoy the usual 5% discount when paying with HSBC or OCBC credit cards. However, you can use your Citibank Dividend Card to enjoy a 16.4% discount. Also, you won’t be able to earn Caltex points for your transactions.

very good and attractive promotion. But very sad thanks points cannot be earned :(

  2. nico Says:

huh? no thanks points? then i rather use shell …

  3. Pao Says:

mathematically, 12% is not good enough.
eg: ExxonMobil - 5% station discount + 5% DBS ESSO card + 1 smiles point for every $1.25. 750 Smiles points can redeem $30 petrol which is equivalent $0.04 per point
    assuming $50 petrol:
    -> for ExxonMobile, it will be $5 discount + 40 Smiles points (equivalent of $1.6) = $6.6 discount effectively, i.e. 13.2%.
-> for Caltex, it will be $6 discount, i.e. 12% (period).
Unless Caltex allows point to be earned, otherwise, it will not pure gimmick to attract people seeking immediate discount.

  4. Caltex user Says:

Been using caltex for the pass 4 yrs. Its not worth pumping anymore. Gd bye Caltex….

  5. Shell Leader Says:

wow, crude has gone up over the last week. wonder if the downward pump price trend will be broken for once

  6. Guest Says:

At this moment, the best is still Esso using Citibank Dividend Platinum Card because 5% (station discount) + 4% (Additional Smiles Discount) + 8% (Cash Back on price after Station Discount and Additional Smiles Discount)

Total is 16.28% and there will still be Smiles Points which can be redeemed for $30 pump voucher with 750 points.

  7. Cheongster Says:

I think the petrol 5% rebate from Citibank Div card applies to all stations, including Caltex. So total discount for Caltex using SAFRA and Dividend card should be 16.4% (12% + 88% x 5%).

  8. pants Says:

Pertaining to Caltex users, it is still worth it to use SAFRA card to pump at caltex instead of credit cards.

For $10 discount, you need to accumulate 350litres.

Based on the current pump prices for Silver Techron:

Credit cards give you $1.3554/l and 350 litres cost $474.39.
The $10 discount from the points will mean you pay $464.39.

SAFRA stands at $1.192752/l and 350 litres will cost $417.4632.

Saw petrol price increase on Shell website –> http://www.shell.com/home/content/sg-en/shell_for_motorists/fuels/discounts/price_board_0720.html

  10. VioletPearl Says:

If I have a 16% Caltext discount and can earn Thanks point. Will it be cheaper than using Safra +Citibank Divident (16.4%)?

  11. Deepblur Says:

If we stop pumping for 3 days on one brand of petrol, I think it may cause the breakdown of price similarity that all the brands are doing now.

Maybe we can gather enough people to target the smaller brand, and stop pumping for 3 days or more, just pump at other brand for the period, the whole supply chain for the brand will be totally screwed up.

    2 possible scenario:

    1. the brand may drop price to relief stock or supply chain problem, it will cost them million of dollars everyday for supply chain disturbance.

    2. other brand may drop price and break off from the price similarity to prevent same scenario happen to them, this will be some form of price war.

Either way is good for car owners and teach them a lesson, bigger brand may be able to withstand the impact but I don’t think they will stood still, million of dollars of losses per day is not something nice to their balance sheet.

May start with one station, than one brand, smaller brand maybe, and move on.

    Happy New Year.

It’s not competitive at all really…
Let’s look at IF I move from EM to pump at Caltex…
    5%site+5%Dividend Card+7%SAFRA= about 17%(simple calculations…spare mte .00%%%)
    Looks like I gained 7% discount..right?

    WRONG….opportunity cost is as follows:
3% rebate from Citibank @ EM shops
about 4~5% lost becase 750 smiles points gives $30fuel voucher which translates to about 4~5% savings.

So actually EM as always been giving citibank customers best rates…. Caltex only just moving to match. not yet out doing.

  13. Yeo Says:

Bro, please do detailed calculations for effective comparison. Exxon Mobil + Citibank Dividend Platinum Computation: 5% (site discount off pump price) + 2.85% (Citibank discount based on amount charged) + 3.04% (Effective Smiles Points Discount based on amount charged) + 4.75% (Citibank Dividend Platinum discount based on amount charged) = 15.64% off the pump price. If you don’t consider the decimal points then it might seem that EM gives better but the decimals can really translate into more than 1% difference.

SAFRA + Citibank Dividend Platinum gives the best discount on petrol currently, from 31 Mar 09 onwards when the Esso $3 per $50 discount coupon expires. SAFRA + Citibank Dividend Platinum: 12% (off pump price, SAFRA) + 4.4% (Citibank Dividend Platinum discount) = 16.4%

Disclaimer: Some heavy pumpers (Gold) might amp up the Smiles points to give 30% extra points, total ~ 4% discount, in which case it might beat the Caltex offer slightly, but only if he/she pumps more than $300 per month on petrol to gain Smiles Gold status.

  14. Yeo Says:

Smiles Points Effective Discount Computation as follows: For every $1.25 spent on petrol = 1 Smiles Point. 750 Smiles Points = $30. Therefore $30 discount can be obtained for every $1.25 x 750 = $937.50 spent on petrol from EM. Discount = 30 / 937.5 = 3.2%. However, 3.2% is based on petrol amount spent, so 3.2% is discounted based on 95% of pump price after EM site discount. Therefore 0.95 x 3.2% = 3.04% (Effective Smiles Point Discount off Pump Price).

  15. Yeo Says:

Bros, please do proper calculations on the Smiles Points, I notice that most of you got the Smiles points computation wrong. It used to be $1 spent for 1 Smiles point about 5 years ago, but EM has since revised it to $1.25 per 1 Smiles point which will REDUCE the discount from 4% to 3.2% of the net amount of petrol dollars spent (note this is AFTER site discount of 5%), which will equate to 3.04% of the pump price. Petrol points rarely translate to more than 4% off the net amount spent on petrol. Some people prefer to redeem stuff from the petrol mart but rarely realise that most items can be potentially purchased at other departmental stores for less (unless they are on super promos). Then again, to each his own choices.

  16. Yeo Says:

Conclusion: For those with Citibank Dividend Platinum AND SAFRA card, pump at Caltex. Forget about those Thanks points knowing that you get the best discount without waiting for any Smiles Points accumulation. And hope that the $3 per $50 discount coupon from EM comes back again so you can switch back. :D

For those without Citibank Dividend Platinum, use other cards at other petrol stations but a bit “Rugi” lah… Anyway the approximate saving over other cards per year is about $100 or so only… we are very “salted turtle”, so count & count to save the $100… Alternatively, one can pray to God of Luck to strike the $5,000 voucher at Shell by keep on pumping at Shell.. :PP That will really ERASE all the need to calculate the decimal points! :D But what are the chances… :x
