    Here we go again…

  2. Net Says:

    @ James,

I think your calculation is not an apple to apple comparison.

Take for example Esso (w/o vouchers $3 off $50 ; without added 35% more points only when you reach >250 litres per month to simply calculation) :
    Using your eg:
    ESSO - 9% (Site & Smile Member) + 8% (DBS-ESSO Card Discount) + 0% ($0 off $50) + 0.348% (DBS Points) + 2.386% (Smiles Points) = 19.734%

This in itself cannot be used as a reference discount for every visit you pump at ESSO (say 60litres of fuel per visit). You can only use :

    ESSO - 9% (Site & Smile Member) + 8% (DBS-ESSO Card Discount) + 0% ($0 off $50) + 0.348% (DBS Points)
    = 17.348%. { 2.386% shld be separate. For the 2.386%, are u using 750 L to exchange for $30 fuel vouchers?}

Hence, how long before you reach 750 litres (I am assuming u pump average of 60 litres for each full tank). Hence if I go once a week top-up, I need 12.5 weeks to get the extra 2.386% on 1 particular top up)

Your calculation seems to suggest that if I go pump Esso, I get 19.734% every time.

To have an apple to apple comparison, u need to compare upfront Discounts + Rebates given at each top-up. Points to exchange Vouchers shld be clearly stated separately that only when u accumulate the required amt (which can take up to 12.5 weeks +/-), then u get that extra % off in a 1 time visit to the station. This is applicable to all petrol stations calculations….. basic tiers to have a simple apple to apple calculation and more advanced tiers indicated separately. Can u do that so it is an apple to apple calculation?

1 more thing, I suggest if you use basic tiers to calculate, best if u can separate individual grades so we can tell more accurately which grades is the cheapest from which company… using of discounts gives me a headache :)

  3. Sandra SMT&P Says:

Yawn, just a few cents, wtf

  4. james Says:

@net please refer to this comment http://www.petrolwatch.com.sg/news/archives/591/fuel-prices-increased-2.html#comment-38529

I do not understand what you mean by “u can separate individual grades so we can tell more accurately which grades is the cheapest from which company” you mean as follow

    Cash discount and rebate
    SPC. ESSO. SHELL
    92. $x.yy. $x.zz. $x.ww
    95. ……….

Also wish to emphasise that I am sharing my computation for the info of all who is interested. It may or may not be applicable to everyone. I welcome constructive comment to improve or correct any mistaken in my computation .

  5. dork Says:

i support james’ calculation. apple to apple is never possible. one company is offering apple; the other orange. the deals are completely different. the main purpose is to confuse us consumrers. james is just trying use a common currency to compare the deals.
if u have claimed the $30 off esso or $20 off shell, you will realise it is real money. to write off this is totally unfair to the companies that offer it. what james did was to amortise this amount to each visit.
whats wrong with waiting for 12 weeks before claiming it? if you buy a car and drive it for 10 years, it is more than 500 weeks. you have lots of opportunities to claim it.
in your calculation you included dbs poiints. based on your logic, this should be taken out as well. you have to spend dont know how much before the dbs points can be converted to cash or vouchers.
I still feel james’ calculation is the best. yes, it may require minor tweaking but it will only affect 0.0x %. it does not change much.
it is usually the spc supporters that will state this. this is because dear beloved spc does not offer any loyalty points. if loyalty points are taken out of the equation, spc’s deal will be one of the best. SPC supportors firmly want to believe this

  6. dork Says:

james, the minor tweaking I mentioned is this. I am using uob on shell as an example.

    1st visit to shell, pump $100, get 10% discount and 4.5 smart$
    2nd visit to shell pump $100, get 10% discount, redeem $4.5 smart$ and get 4.275 smart$
3rd visit to shell, pump $100, get 10% discount, redeem $4.275 and get 4.286 smart$.

If you continue to do this, you will realise that the smart$ rebate amounts to 4.2857%. But if you were to redeem you smart$ on singtel bills, then the calculation is more complex.

Then again who cares about the 0.2% difference. your calculation is good enough for me

  7. be careful citibank esso Says:

remember, esso citibank / mobile privilege users, be careful
they added in the minimum spend clause into their cards recently

minimum pump needs to be now about $59
otherwise go pump SPC and use posb card, forget citibank. posb has no minimum spend.

    sneaky trick

  8. james Says:

Citibank effective 5 Aug. I will factor that in when that day come.

@dork, I am checking wih my friend that pump shell. Seems that the smart$ is calculated before the redem take place
Do you pump shell? is it correct?

  9. Net Says:

    Hi @ Dork,

What you’ve stated is exactly what I am talking about, you cannot compare Apple & oranges. Hence I am suggesting if you can compare the basic tier that is common to all petrol companies

    eg :
    After After After
Grade 98 Pump Price Site disc Loyalty card Disc Bank Discount
    Esso
    Shell
    Caltex
    SPC

    After After After
Grade 95 Pump Price Site disc Loyalty card Disc Bank Discount
    Esso
    Shell
    Caltex
    SPC
    etc etc

Once the basic tier is listed, then u include other points rebates loyalty eg :
    Loyalty points or Rebates Requirements
ESSO (DBS) 1.+++ % off (points) $30 exchanged once u have pumped 750 litres
ESSO (Citi) 5% rebates Given every transaction minimum $59 , etc
SHELL (UOB) 7% rebates Gievn every transacyttion
~1.57 off?? (points) Need 600 Escape points for $20 fuel redemption disc
CALTEX (HSBC) 4% rebates Given every pump
SPC 3% rebates Given every pump
    etc etc

    Current month promotion :
Esso - $3 off for every $50 available at Upper Thomson / AMK
    Shell
    etc etc

Hence you can now compare Apple to Apple, And not Apple to Oranges to Durian :)
So if SPC give $5 of $50 at AMK / Thomoson, it would only be 27.55% off for that few Station.
Its easier then to have a fair comparison. And I can go to the station and pump in the fuel confident that I will get the best discount all the time and not going in to one think I get the best discounts , but will many conditions attached. Hope James dun mind my suggestion as it’ll be clearer to compare.

  10. james Says:

@net I welcome all suggestion. Infact I do have that computed. You can try to check out the pervious thread where I post the price instead of %. I had break it down to 4 tier. Cash discount, rebate, rewards points and additional bonus.

That should be th apples you are looking at. I will update it once I get my hand on my comp.

  13. james Says:

Which is better? I can’t stop thinking that there is too many numbers. Should I just list Grade 95 price?

  14. Sony Says:

@ James, agree, just list Grade 95 since the prices for the same grade across the brands are the same. really appreciate you putting up all the computations so that we can all compare the prices.

For SPC, I thought they also offer discount for AMEX card or have they stopped this promotion? Have not been to SPC for a while as I feel that their fuel is not as good as the other brands.

For Shell, are you refering to UOB One card or UOB platinum card?

Also, thanks for highlighting that there is a min spend of $59 for Esso Citibank. Do you know if this $59 is gross or net?

  15. dork Says:

james, i still prefer you old system.

it is also tiered but it is all in %. Since petrol of the same gradel have the same base price, a higher % would mean lower cost. if i do not qualify from certain benefit, eg i dont pump at amk, i will just subtract the % off my total discount.

you have filled the whole screen with numbers with your new system. it is very confusing. Seriously, I dont even know how to qualify for each number

uob smart$ is offered on the final sum paid, after all the discount have been deduicted

  18. Net Says:

    Sorry James, I fainted liao…. hahaha….

  19. james Says:

No problem at all. I will continue to update in % as well as the price of 95.

Didn’t know that shell and caltex had increase price. Just pump at ESSO at 730. Price still at 2.02 for 95

  20. james Says:

@net, how about this? Base on Shell up by 4 cents while ESSO and SPC still remain

    SPC ($1.6655) - 10% (Site & SPC & U) + 5% (POSB Card Discount) + 0% ($0 off $40) + 2.55% (3% Everyday$ rebate) = 17.55%
    Shell ($1.7156) - 10% (Site & Escape Member) + 0% ($0 off $50) + 4.5% (5% SMART$ Rebate) + 1.893% (Escape Points) + 0.327% (UOB UNI$) = 16.72%
    ESSO ($1.6214) - 9% (Site & Smile Member) + 8% (DBS-ESSO Card Discount) + 0% ($0 off $50) + 2.386% (Smiles Points) + 0.348% (DBS Points) = 19.734%
    ESSO ($1.6014) - 9% (Site & Smile Member) + 5% (Citi Card Discount) + 0% ($0 off $50) + 4.3% (5% Dividen Rebate) + 2.424% (Smiles Points) = 20.724%
    With voucher
    ESSO ($1.4964) - 9% (Site & Smile Member) + 8% (DBS-ESSO Card Discount) + 6% ($3 off $50) + 2.572% (Smiles Points) + 0.348% (DBS Points) = 25.92%
    ESSO ($1.4826) - 9% (Site & Smile Member) + 5% (Citi Card Discount) + 6% ($3 off $50) + 4% (5% Dividen Rebate) + 2.606% (Smiles Points) = 26.606%

    Additional Bonus
    Shell ($1.6469) = 16.72% +3.333% = 20.053% (UOB ONE Card Bonus for >$300 per month)
    DBS-ESSO ($1.5842) = 19.734% +0.835% = 20.569% (ESSO 35% Smiles point for >250 littre per month)
    ESSO EMPC ($1.5842) = 20.724% +0.848% = 21.572% (ESSO 35% Smiles point for >250 littre per month)
    With voucher
    DBS-ESSO ($1.4782) = 25.92% +0.9% = 26.82% (ESSO 35% Smiles point for >250 littre per month)
    ESSO EMPC ($1.4641) = 26.606% +0.912% = 27.518% (ESSO 35% Smiles point for >250 littre per month)

  21. Ho Says:

Faster go top up full tank at SPC!!!! Pump price up another 4 cents!!! Really price go up every 2-3 days man… crazy…

95 price is now $2.06 at Caltex… I rushed to pump at SPC for 2.00 just a couple of days ago….

really slow to come down.. FAST to go up…

  22. james Says:

@Sony, I also have not been to SPC for long. AMEX used to be offer for Fri to Sun. The rate I think is not as high as POSB (5% + 3% rebate) vs AMEX (6%). Not sure if is still on.

For Shell, I refering to UOB One card. I am aware that UOB Infinite card offer 7% but that is for invited memner only. I am not sure if it has the extra 3.33% bonus for >$300

From 5 Aug Citibank Dividen require a min charge of $50 to earn 5% rebate. you need to pump $59 (without $3 voucher). after applying the 14% off, you then sign for $50.74

  23. Louis Says:

Caltex up another 4cents today :(

  24. james Says:

@safra and anyone who pump caltex, I had been reading up and the various offer for caltex. Althought HSBC Offer 6% rebate, there is a condition that you have to spend $600 each month for 3 months. It also state that it will match to 15% ( including site, credit card and rebates). If that is the case then using safra with 14% off and combine wih HSBC will not maximise the discount as it burst the 15% cap. If that is the case then using safra card and Citibank dividend card with then get the best discount. 14% + 5% rebate. This will get you to 18.3% off. Am I right? If there are other better combination, appreciate if you could highlight it to me.

  25. Good Guy Says:

No surprise that pump prices are up again. Brent Crude Oil is USD106 today. It was about USD100 last week.

By the way, James, thanks for all the calculations !!!!
You are the best petrolwatch member !!!!

  26. Ho Says:

pls share if pump price at SPC has gone up yet.. thanks!

  27. Jeff Says:

    Today pumped Esso. 95 $2.06/liter liao. :(

  28. jack Says:

    Pump spc 95 $2.02 @ 11.50pm…
    Price haven’t up

  29. lppl Says:

Esso up 4c at 4pm on 21jul, now only spc still no action

  30. Safra Says:

@ James, you are quite right at this present moment. Once 1 Aug come, voucher for Esso gone, this might be a better offer even without the 14% discount off but still with the $2 off per $40 petrol pump. Bring it up to $59 for Citibank dividend, it might give a better discount than the rest even without the need for Thanks point, unless there are more vouchers from different brand coming 1 Aug.

  31. james Says:

@safra, noted I will put it into formula and the result will speak for itself. For July can the 14% be used in conjunction with the $2 off $40?

Side note: safra 14% is only applicable to selected station.

  32. Safra Says:

@ James, yes, 14% discount together with $2 off $40. Yes, 14% to selected stations. In the meantime, this offer is not good enough when compared with Esso. It might change when 1 Aug come.

  33. cibitank dividend tactic Says:

my friend said their citibank dividend new tactic is very clever, for regular pumpers who just ask for $50, they will not get the old rebate and will not realise it until it’s too late.

  34. Anthony Says:

The $59 minimum for Citibank only applies for Dividend Card? So if I use a regular Citibank card and get 14% discount, I don’t have to worry about the minimum spending?

  35. Good Guy Says:

    Hi Anthony,
that’s right. in order to get the extra 5% cash rebate from citibank , you need to spend $59 on the citibank dividend card . this is on top of the 14% discount you get on site at the petrol station.

however, if you use regular citibank card, i think you only get 14% and that’s it. no extra 5% cash rebate

  36. C Says:

    Hi, guys.
Am I right to say that without any credit cards, Esso gives the highest discount at 9% (Station + Smiles) as compared to the rest at 5% only?

  37. james Says:

    @C SPC member get 10%
