JB petrol is not as good.. I can’t get the same fuel efficiency as the Singapore ones. In fact.. they call it Ron 87 but its actually 95 plus some additives…. If you stick to the 1/4 tank rule. you’ll save about 60 cents a litre x 15 = 9. But if calculate toll.. its only $6 savings… its worse if you take into consideration distance to JB and back to your house.. For E.g. JB to Toa Payoh 30km 2 ways. IF your car is 10km/l. You use 3 l of petrol.. Spend $4.5 on the journey alone.. Plus… you waste petrol whilst waiting at the jam.. How much can you actually save? $2t really worth the effort.. unless you go in empty..then It’ll save you $.6 x 60= 36. - 7.5 = 28.5. But really who dares take the risk? ONce caught its a hefty fine… Not worth it… Tan xiao pian yi….

@ James, went to Citibank EMPC website. There seems to be a lot of *** attached to the discount calculation.
Noticed that there is a cap on the amount of cashback - A maximum of S$800 cash back may be accumulated every 12 months. So there is a limit to the cash back. It does not mean that if you pump more, you will get the 5% rebate. Once you hit the $800 cap, additional litre will not give you anymore rebate. As the rebate is based on your total card purchase and not only at Shell, we need to be careful when calculating the fuel discount.
On the 35% BONUS Smiles points, do you know if I will get the bonus points from the 251 litres or so long I pump > 250 litres per month, I get the 35% BONUS Smiles points for the entire month’s purchase.
Also, my car’s fuel consumption is about 12km/L. Hence I will need to drive at least 3,000 km per month or 100km per day for everyday of a month (!!!) before I can be entitled to the 35% Bonus Smiles points. Unless we are in a sales job that require us to drive around everyday, I am not certain if it is even possible to clock up 3,000 km of usage per month for a typical driver who uses the car only to and from work and errands during weekends. This 35% Bonus points sound very fishy to me. Because if I am in a sales job, my company will probably give me a fleet card because the petrol company will offer them more attractive discounts than normal drivers like me.
Think DBS is a better than Citibank .

To Melvin - Tan xiao pian yi….
Everyone here is a cheapo, otherwise you won’t visit here.
July 24th, 2012 at 11:30 am
Cheapo is ok but best is do it legally. My friend got caught by SG customs for less than 3/4 rule recently. The fine is super not worth it.

@sony:

For anyone to hit the $800 cap, he will need to spend $16,000 on petrol. Assume $2 per litre, he needs to pump 8,000 litres of petrol per year.
This translates to 667 litres per month. Assuming your fuel consumption is ultra low, 5km per litre, u need to travel 3,335km per month.
u do the maths. the cap will be hit or not?
July 24th, 2012 at 10:20 pm
@Sony, I make a quick calculation that include dining, groceries etc it is really difficult to hit the $800 cap. As or the smiles points I understand it is difficult to pump 250 litre a month. In fact I had never pump 200 litre a month! I put it as a separate line at the bottom so that those higher traveller is able to see the discount the can get.
Come 5 Aug when the min charge of $50 kicks in and when there is a voucher to be spend at a amount less that 60. DBS may be better. I had already tweet my computation to factor that in. When there is a chance I will post a sample of my result for you to take a look.
July 25th, 2012 at 7:50 am
@James,
Assuming I pump 600 litres, for $20 worth of escape points, I have the following calculation, which differs from your $1.716 per litre for Grade 95.
600 litres Discount SMART$ Escape Pt UNIT$
10% 4.5% 0.327% Net
1236.00 (123.60) (55.62) (20.00) (4.04) 1032.74
1.7212 (Per litre)
Did I miss out anything?
July 25th, 2012 at 11:27 am
oil correcting downwards
remember, if you pump less than S$59, don’t bother with citibank-esso, go for SPC.
they are playing that minimum purchase game.
July 25th, 2012 at 5:30 pm
Hi, has the $50 for citi kicks in liao? Seems that for spending in pharamacy also dun have 2% rebate if it is less than $50 has started..
July 25th, 2012 at 6:04 pm
@Oowc, I check and get back to you later
@citi
Manage to find the follow in my Jul statement.
“Enjoy your DIV$ cash back seamlessly
From 5 Aug 2012 effectively, DIV$ earned will be credited into your Citi DIVIDEND Card. Earn 5% cash back on petrol, 2% on dining, groceries & at
pharmacies with minimum spend of S$50 per transaction. Get 0.5% cash back on all other spend. T&Cs at http://www.citibank.com.sg.”
I am still earning 5% rebate on my petrol for the Jul Statement.
July 25th, 2012 at 6:50 pm
@Oowc, you have an interesting finding. I tried and I had no confirm answer to your question.
I made my escape point calculation base on the actual amout spend (600litre = $1056) so 20/1056 gives me 1.893%. Base on your pump above, is base on the amount before discount (20/1236) = 1.618%.
Now I am not sure which is the correct one to use.
July 26th, 2012 at 4:19 pm
Crude oil has dropped, so why petrol price has not dropped?
July 26th, 2012 at 9:47 pm
@Oowc after going through over and over, I had finally come to a conclusion that you are correct, I had base the rented with reference to the actual petrol price. Therefore the escape points and smiles point should be base similarily as well. I will make the changes to my computation.
July 27th, 2012 at 8:21 am
I think my escape points escaped from my bill last night!
July 27th, 2012 at 1:21 pm
Brent crude has gone up till above USD 105.
Better go pump, bros. Was hoping for price drop. Highly unlikely now…
July 28th, 2012 at 11:59 pm
sea hum no change in price at 2.06 as at 11pm.
July 30th, 2012 at 8:49 am
@jame..hmm nvm i will try to hit $50 for my pharamacy purchase next time..
esso no change also just pump yesterday..95 still at 2.06
July 30th, 2012 at 3:52 pm

August 2nd, 2012 at 11:32 pm
Oh that’s interesting. I didn’t receive any sms from Esso. Maybe you are one of the lucky ones !
August 3rd, 2012 at 8:15 pm
@Good Guy indeed I am one of the lucky one. I check with the counter staff this evening and she say only those who receive the SMS will get double smiles point. The additional smiles points will be added after 31 Aug when the promotion ends. Currently updating my computation for $50 transaction amount for citi div card and adding caltex computation. Most prob next week the. I am able to post the new summary.
August 3rd, 2012 at 11:57 pm
Hi James, thanks for computing the discounts.
Hi everyone, brent crude oil price just jumped to USD108 today. It was USD104.
i think it’s time to pump full tank again….. maybe petrol price will go up tomorrow !
August 6th, 2012 at 9:09 pm
(Just added Caltex, Please help to check if I got the discount right, Thanks in advance)
Base on the latest price pump price of Grade 95 at $2.06
Best discount (e.g. with additional voucher and/or double rewards points)
SPC - 10% (Site/SPC&U) + 5% (POSB Card) + 0% ($0 off $40) + 2.55% (3% Everyday$) = 17.55% /$1.698
Shell - 10% (Site/Escape) + 0% ($0 off $50) + 4.5% (5% SMART$) + 1.618% (Escape Pts) + 0.327% (UOB UNI$) = 16.445%/$1.721
Caltex - 11% (Site/SAFRA) + 5% ($2 off $40) + 4.2% (5% Dividen) + 1.214% (Thanks Pts) = 21.414%/$1.619
ESSO with Double Smiles pts at AMK/Thomson only those who receive the SMS offer
ESSO DBS- 9%(Site/Smile) + 8%(DBS-ESSO Card) + 0%($0 off $50) + 3.883%(Smiles Pts) + 0.348%(DBS Pts) = 21.231%/$1.623
ESSO EMPC - 9%(Site/Smile) + 5%(Citi Card) + 0%($0 off $50) + 4.3%(5% Dividen) + 3.883%(Smiles Pts) = 22.183%/$1.603 (Pump $50)
Applicable to the rest of the station without the addition above)
ESSO DBS - 9%(Site/Smile) + 8%(DBS-ESSO Card) + 0%($0 off $50) + 1.98%(Smiles Pts) + 0.348%(DBS Pts) = 19.328%/$1.662
ESSO EMPC - 9%(Site/Smile) + 5%(Citi Card) + 0%($0 off $50) + 4.3%(5% Dividen) + 1.98%(Smiles Pts) = 20.28%/$1.642 (Pump $50)
August 7th, 2012 at 8:23 am
@ James, do you need to consider Citibank requirement of nett $50 pump for Dividend card for petrol pump using this?
August 7th, 2012 at 10:13 am
Need to pump around $58 (provided no voucher) to enjoy the 5% citi dividend cash rebate.
August 7th, 2012 at 10:20 am
Do I still need to accumulate til $50 then a cheque will be sent out or will get the 5% rebate on my monthly credit card statement for Citibank Dividend Card?
August 7th, 2012 at 1:42 pm
Shell increased pump prices by 3 cents 7 August 2012 1PM
Shell 95 $2.090
Shell 98 $2.200
Shell V-Power $2.440
Shell Diesel $1.610
August 7th, 2012 at 2:05 pm
With the current 14% at ESSO, you need to pump $59 which then you will cahrge $50.74 to Dividend card. From 5 Aug the dividend rebate will off set your bill. I believe is the next bill rather then the current one. I need to go back and read the term again.
Yes the $50 does effect my computation but it is apply to CALTEX as it has a $2off $40. Will re work it when the price change settle down.
A question for caltex goers. Can use SAFRA MEMBER and OCBC together ? Site 5% Safra 6% and then pay be OCBC another 6% so get 17% off?
August 7th, 2012 at 2:10 pm
@James, yes, you could.
August 7th, 2012 at 4:12 pm
From Shell Web Site
The information provided here has been updated as at 07 August 2012, 1300 hrs.
Nett Price Pump Price

Shell V-Power (98UL) $2.318 $2.440
Shell Diesel (AGO) $1.530 $1.610
August 7th, 2012 at 5:57 pm
Will Caltex increase the pump price and then offer the “special” discount on national day?
August 8th, 2012 at 10:15 am
Pumped at ESSO at 830. Price of 95 is still the same at $2.06
August 8th, 2012 at 12:12 pm
Seems like there is a 18% off @ Caltex only on 9 Aug from midnight onwards.
August 8th, 2012 at 1:28 pm
Zoom pass ESSO a while ago. Glance and saw a yellow paper on the glass door. Not sure what is the content. Hopefully is my eye plying trick.
August 8th, 2012 at 4:23 pm
Wa…. how come price up again ??? Cowtax and spca not increase?
No national day 47% UP???????
August 8th, 2012 at 4:52 pm
It’s up again because Brent Crude Oil is now USD 112. It was USD 108 a few days ago
August 8th, 2012 at 5:46 pm
@ James:
Thank a lot for your very valuable calculation.
I am a new driver and a new member of this site. Could you please share with me what does “Dividen” mean for CALTEX and ESSO in you calculation? Also, Can all the cards (e.g. Citi card, smart, smile SAFRA, etc.) be combined together when we pump at the station? Thanks again & in advance!
August 8th, 2012 at 6:06 pm
Why Brent decrease but petrol increase? Suspect petrol price is pegged to gold price
August 8th, 2012 at 9:16 pm
Caltex is giving 18% discount.
Quoted:
“The 18% petrol/diesel discount on 9 August (from midnight on 9 August to 2359pm on 9 August) is valid for all modes of payment except Caltex StarCash. And if you hold the HSBC Platinum/Premier or Infinite card, you can continue to enjoy the additional 4% rebate on this day! Please note that the 18% discount is not valid with other promotions or card discounts.”
But if you use Dividend card you get extra 5% on top (18%+5%~=23%);
Standard Chartered XtraSaver holders, depend on the tier you are on, you get UP TO extra 15% (18%+15%~=33%).
For me, I am on the 10% tier. So I will be getting 18%+10%~=28%.
Only for the abovementioned date.
August 8th, 2012 at 9:17 pm
I forgot.. here’s the source link: https://www.facebook.com/CaltexSingapore
August 8th, 2012 at 11:07 pm
@topguytang, dividen means Citibank Dividen Credit Card. You can also use EMPC (Esso-Mobil Privilege card) that is link to your dividen card. For more info on these card, please refer to Citibank website.
Not all cards can be use together however my computation is a valid combination and it should earn the discount as I put it.
August 9th, 2012 at 2:52 am
pumped esso98 at around 9pm on 8/8.
increase 3 cents to $2.20/L.
August 9th, 2012 at 6:31 pm
Just pump at caltex & only have 1 off 18% discount. No further discount on all credit cards.
August 10th, 2012 at 7:55 am
Dividend and XtraSaver are given separately by the bank. You can see it in the bank’s statement
August 10th, 2012 at 9:11 am
Caltex 10 August 2012 9AM
92 - $2.040
95 - $2.090
98 - $2.240
Diesel - $1.610
August 10th, 2012 at 11:04 am
Immediately the next day after 18% discount, Caltex increase the price. What kind of democracy are they referring? It is a known fact consumers dun determine the price.
August 10th, 2012 at 2:21 pm
SPC 92 2.04 11.30am 10 Aug 2012

@ James, Safra members have 14% discount with $2 off for every $40 pump at selected caltex station. Promotion till 31 Aug 12. More info:http://www.safra.sg/member_promotion_details.aspx?oid=6900.
August 10th, 2012 at 9:10 pm
@ Safra, James, so this means Caltex = 14% (Site/SAFRA) + 9% (OCBC coz same 14%) + 5% ($2 off $40) + 1.196% (Thanks Pts)?
August 10th, 2012 at 10:50 pm
@SAFRA, The term stat
“•Promotion is not applicable in conjunction with any other promotions, discounts, privileges or offers.” so does paying ith OCBC card attract another 6% off mean total 20% direct discount?
Pump $40, sign on credit card $32?
August 11th, 2012 at 9:47 am
@ James, it is applicable as I spoke to the cashier @ caltex on 9 Aug evening. He told me to use the $2 voucher with 14% discount after 9 Aug.
August 11th, 2012 at 1:33 pm
@SAFRA I meant is 14% safra discount usable with addition 6% OCBC credit card? I it does, GREAT! You get upfront 20% off and the less $2 more.
If it doesn’t, then does other station safra 11% be use with OCBC 6%? If this is possible then you get 17% off and then less $2 more!
August 11th, 2012 at 7:04 pm
@ James, yes, it is useable.
August 11th, 2012 at 7:09 pm
@ James, wrong info type here, please see the latest message that you post in
