Oil slid to below $40 a barrel on Thursday as further evidence of slowing demand trumped OPEC’s biggest ever production cut, Reuters has reported.

US light crude for January delivery, which expires on Friday, fell 42 cents to $39.64 a barrel by 10am UAE time, after falling to $39.19 earlier in the session, the lowest since July 2004, and following an 8% overnight drop.

Saudi Arabia’s oil export revenues could fall 41% to $172bn in 2009 due to lower production and prices, reported Reuters, citing a report by local investment bank Jadwa Investment.

This shortfall in oil revenue would result in the kingdom posting real economic growth of 1.5% in 2009, which would be the lowest since 2002.

The world’s largest oil exporter’s average daily production is expected to shrink 8.7% to 8.4 million barrels per day (bpd) in 2009 down from an average 9.2 million bpd in 2008.

A new report by the US government says global oil demand will slow this year and next as worldwide GDP growth declines, marking the first time consumption has contracted for two consecutive years since the early 1980s.

The US Energy Information Administration report said oil consumption will fall by 50,000 barrels per day in 2008 and 450,000 barrels per day next year. The lower forecast came as the EIA revised down its projection for 2009 global GDP growth to 0.5% next year, down from 2.7% in 2008, reported Reuters.
